Review of the VARIDESK adjustable height stand-up desk
Varidesk is an adjustable height stand-up desk that you can place on your regular desk so you can work with your computer while sitting or standing and prevent sitting disease
. At its lowest setting, Varidesk measures 5 inches in height, but it can raise your monitor or laptop by a maximum of 15.5 inches at intervals of 0.5 inches. It is suitable for anyone up to 6.5 feet tall. It has a fully customizable companion app that reminds you to periodically switch from sitting to standing. The app also reports your calorie burn based on how often you sit or stand.
Varidesk is available in three different models: Varidesk Pro, Varidesk Single, and Varidesk Laptop. Varidesk Pro (36 x 20 inches) is also known as Varidesk Dual because it can accommodate two monitors. It weighs 47.3 pounds. Varidesk Single (30 x 20 inches) is for single monitor use. It weighs 41.5 pounds. Varidesk Laptop (30 x 17 inches) weighs 39.4 pounds. All the models use the same materials: a black plastic desk and a metal frame.
Getting set up
We reviewed the Varidesk Single at the HomeGear Lab. Varidesk comes fully assembled in the 5-inch-high position. It took two of us to lift it and place on the desk. Varidesk Single took up almost half the space of the 31 x 65.5-inch desk. We had to put it in the middle of the desk to line up with the gap for the chair. This did not leave much space on the sides for things like printers and other devices. To its credit, Varidesk did not look odd on the desk; it blended in nicely with the existing décor.
Varidesk Single comes with a sliding keyboard tray below the desk. Like the other models, it has lock handles on each side that you need to squeeze to raise or lower the desk to your desired height. Once you get it to the height you need and release the lock handles, you should hear a satisfying click that confirms you have set it properly. Varidesk features spring assisted lift technology, which makes it easy to raise or lower the desk. It only takes a couple of seconds to switch from sitting mode to standing mode and vice versa.
Putting it to use
We placed a 24-inch ASUS monitor on Varidesk. The monitor was 8 inches above eye level when I sat at the desk due to Varidesk's height. Ideally, your eyes should be two to three inches lower than the top of the monitor, so we had to raise the hydraulic chair by 5 inches. Fortunately, my feet still rested on the ground comfortably with the chair at this height, but this may not be the case for every user out there. Because of this height difference, you may have to get a lower desk than you would usually use to compensate for the height of Varidesk.
It was very easy and safe to switch between a sitting and standing position with Varidesk, although the monitor shook a little bit during the transition. When Varidesk was in standing position, the monitor shook when we typed vigorously on the keyboard. In general, it seemed very sturdy and well built, and it was easy to use.
There are a couple things to keep in mind if you are considering using a Veridesk. It's important to remember that the Varidesk Single measures 15.5 inches high when fully extended, so make sure that your monitor's power and data cables are long enough for the additional height. Moreover, you have to change your keyboard placement every time you switch from sitting to standing position and vice versa. For example, when you are sitting, it makes sense to have your keyboard on the desk rather than on the keyboard tray. We would recommend using a wireless keyboard and mouse with Varidesk for optimal ease of use.
Varidesk variable height stand-up desk makes it easy to switch between sitting and standing positions while you work at your computer. It keeps your monitor stable on the desk. But most importantly, it helps prevent sitting disease by allowing you to work in a standing position. The free app reminds you when to switch between positions. Overall, Varidesk is a great product. It comes fully assembled and it is easy to set up. HomeGear Lab gives it the 3 Lights On: Nice Performer rating.
