Home & Small Office Networking

Ah, the joy of sharing once you have set up a home, home office or small business network.
Ah, the joy of sharing.

5 Easy Steps to Build a Home or Small Office Network

Today households, families, and small businesses have multiple computers with wireless access to the Internet, which is great. But many stop short of connecting the computers to each other. That's too bad, because they are missing out on the benefits of sharing the printer and file sharing. HomeGear.com to the rescue!

A network offers lots of freedom to use your computers from different parts of your home or small business. With a network, you can share printers and files with all your computers.

Below are the 5 basic steps for building your own network:
  1. Purchase and install a router so all of your computers can use one Internet connection and communicate with each other. When you install the router, you'll set up a network name.
  2. Connect all of your computers to the router/network. You can connect the computers with a cable, although it may get kind of crowded around the router. Better yet, set up a wireless connection so you can work from different parts of the home or office. Most laptops and desktop computers have wireless capability, and if they don't, you can get a wireless adapter.
  3. Connect your printer to any computer that is connected to the router. All other computers in the network will be able to print from this printer – no more emailing files to the computer connected to the printer. You can connect as many printers as you like.  An easy way to do this is to use a program like Network Magic, which sets things up for you automatically.
  4. On each computer, share the files, music, videos, and anything else you want with the other computers in your network...again, no more emailing back and forth between computers. Simply open the shared folder on any computer connected to the network.
  5. Secure your home or office network so neighbors or hackers can't access it. Wireless routers send signals several hundred feet in all directions, so anyone nearby could log on to your network and access your shared files if you don't use some common security precautions. Most routers come with security settings, but it's up to you to use them. To check how secure your wireless network is right now and learn what you can do to make it more secure, you can use a free tool like the Pure Networks Security Scan.
Pure Networks sells networking software to consumers and small businesses. The software has won awards for its digital technology that simply works and simply connects. Its flagship product, Network Magic, is the only solution that works across all major operating systems, including Windows XP, Vista and Mac. It is a complete, easy-to-use and secure home networking solution.
