Review of the Mr Beams Power Outage Lighting System Kit
by Claudio Duarte
After Hurricane Irene hit the East Coast, about 8 million Americans lost power in their homes. This crisis inspired the president of Wireless Lighting, David Levine, to expedite the development and release of the world's first Home Power Outage Lighting System. This system promises to light your home interior automatically and maintenance free, whenever any natural disaster strikes your home.
In other words, the Mr Beam system provides reliable backup light during power outages. We found that it was easy to install, even if you know nothing about electronics. Once installed, the lights automatically received a wireless signal through the kit's patent-pending Power Outage Detector, which plugs directly into any electrical outlet. The power detector monitors the electricity in your home so it can turn the backup lights on as soon as a power outage occurs. This device also serves as a flashlight and a remote control that lets you light specific areas of your home as needed.

Drilling down to the details of the lighting system The Power Outage Detector MB220 arrived at the HomeGear.com lab along with two Ceiling Light MB985 units and one Stair and Path Light MB785 for review. The MB220 is a small power detector unit that operates wirelessly to turn on the MB985 and MB785 lights if power outage occurs.
The Power Outage Detector, or POD, connects to a power outlet anywhere inside your home. The kit's lights must be placed within 70 feet of the POD to work properly. Once the setup is complete, your home should not go dark during a power outage. As soon as the POD detects the absence of electricity into its plug, it automatically sends a wireless signal to the MB785 and MB985, turning those lights on. The Power Outage Detector also functions as a remote control that allows you to turn the lights on or off manually. You can also use it as a flashlight.
