Review of the LG Spirit 4G smartphone on the MetroPCS network

Welcome to this review of the LG Spirit 4G, LG model number MS870. As we state at the end of this review, this is an ongoing review that we will be updating. So, please bookmark this using the links at the bottom of this page.

Speed

One way that we like to determine real-world, operational speed of a smartphone is to see how responsive it is while downloading and installing new apps. Phones with slower processors or chip sets will have short periods of unresponsiveness especially during app installation. The LG Spirit phone showed no such lag at all. This is probably due to its nearly top-of-the-line, 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor.

Battery life

The LG Spirit 4G comes with a lithium ion battery with a battery capacity of 2150 mAh. This is one of the highest capacity batteries for a smartphone in its class. So, we expected good performance out of it and we were not disappointed.

Battery life, sleep mode

Test 1: We left the Spirit 4G unplugged and in sleep mode for 9:00 hours. The battery charge drained from 65% to 58% full. That's just 7% in 9 hours, which is excellent performance.

Test 2: Unplugged and in sleep mode for 7:00 hours. The battery charge began and ended at 25%. That means zero loss of battery charge! This could be due to Ice Cream Sandwich putting the phone into a deep sleep mode when the battery charge is at 30% or less.

Battery life, constant mixed use mode

The battery charge went from 100% to 65% in 1 hour and 50 minutes in the following environment. Writing on Evernote using Google Speech to Text (which uses the Google Voice Search app). Web browsing with Dolphin. Screen brightness set at 79%. WiFi on. MetroPCS Easy WiFi app running. GPS on. Bluetooth off. Live wallpaper on home screen.

Battery life, constant talk

After 1 hour and 19 minutes of talk time using a Bluetooth headset, the battery charge went from 100% to 89%. Again, this is excellent performance. Other open processes: WiFi on. MetroPCS Easy WiFi app running. GPS on.

Charge time

In 3 hours and 10 minutes while the LG Spirit was in sleep mode, we charged the phone's battery from 5% to 100%.

Phone construction, build quality.

The LG Spirit MS870 is quite thin, actually one of the thinnest smartphones at 0.37 inches. It is also one of the lightest smartphones (4.3 ounces) for its size (L 5.08" x W 2.61"). Despite the lightness and thinness, LG did not sacrifice screen real estate: The screen size is 4.5 inches.

Here is how the HomeGear Lab judges a mobile phone's construction and build quality. We squeeze it, throw it from one hand to the other, press on the screen, and attempt to flex the entire phone by pressing with one finger on the back and two fingers on the top and bottom. We press its power and volume buttons, and we plug into the charger and earphone ports and flex the plugs to determine the sturdiness and durability of the connection.

After performing those tests on the LG Spirit 4G, the phone feels very solid, not cheap, and high quality in every aspect of those tests. The phone has an excellent feel in the hand. The metal back has a subtle, crosshatch pattern which offers a bit of extra grip.
