Review of the Lepow U-Stone 12000 high capacity power bank
Power banks are convenient, but they have several drawbacks. They take a relatively long time to charge; they drain power automatically when they go unused for a long time; high capacity ones are bulky and heavy; and many power banks are poorly made, even to the point of being dangerous. Lepow International claims that it has addressed all these issues in its new U-Stone 12000mAh high capacity power bank.
Design and features
The Lepow U-Stone power bank comes packaged in a unique box that looks like a stone. The box is made of recyclable paper and is held closed by an elastic band. The box contains the U-Stone 12000, a user manual, and a quick start guide.
The U-Stone itself looks, naturally, like a U-shaped stone. It has rounded edges and a streamlined design. The outer shell's smoothness makes the U-Stone comfortable to hold and easy to slip in and out of your pocket. The U-Stone is 6.7-inches long, 3.1-inches wide, and 1-inch deep. Its vintage style and trendy finish gives it an appealing look. No wonder the U-Stone 12000 won the 2013 Red Hot Design Award.
The top part of the U-Stone has a handy built-in storage space for the charging cable. The U-Stone 12000 has two ports: a regular USB 2.0 port and a mini-USB port. You can charge the power bank with an A/C adapter (2.1A/5V). It has four LED lights that indicate how much charge is currently in the power bank. You can turn the LED indicators on by gently shaking the U-Stone.
The battery core and external shell are made of flame-resistant material. The U-Stone's intelligent circuit design prevents overcharge, over-discharge, overload, reverse, and short circuit problems. It also features protection against overheating.
Putting it to the test
According to Lepow, a fully-charged U-Stone 12000 is capable of charging an iPhone 5 seven times. In order to test its true capacity, we drained whatever charge the U-Stone had out of box by using it to charge an iPad 4 and an HTC One. Once we had drained all the juice, we charged the U-Stone with an A/C adapter. It took 6 hours and 49 minutes to bring the U-Stone to a full charge, which is very fast for a power bank of this size. We were then able to fully charge an iPhone 5 three times, an HTC One once, and an iPad 4 once with some charge left to spare. The U-Stone 12000 passed our test for charge capacity. It was quick in charging the devices.
The Lepow U-Stone is attractive and stylish, but more importantly, it performs as advertised. It takes only 7 hours to fully charge itself, while other devices with similar capacity can take up to 20 hours. It offers protection from overcharging and over-discharging, and it automatically adjusts its output current and voltage to match whatever device is plugged in to it. Bottom line, the Lepow U-Stone would be great to have on-hand in case of power outage or when traveling. It is safe for both you and the devices you use. HomeGear gives U-Stone its highest rating: 4 Lights On: Excellent and Highly Recommended.
