Review of the Lenovo T61 15" laptop

User-friendliness

I love intuitive things. I'm intelligent enough, but I don't like wasting my time to figure out poorly engineered devices. A well-done user interface allows a user to create and manage complicated things simply. This is why I was a Mac-head from 1984 to 2002. Separately from Windows itself, the T61 wonderfully met my standards for user friendliness.

So to investigate such a user-friendliness standard, as I unpacked the T61, I pulled out the manual and set it aside. Immediately after unpacking the T61, I wanted to use the Ultrabay battery and get it charging, before booting the T61 for the first time. The Ultrabay battery is in addition to the standard battery that fits on the bottom of the T61. The T61's Ultrabay already had the DVD drive inserted, so I had to remove it. On my first try, with a flick of a slide lock and pull on a handle, the DVD module was out and the Ultrabay battery was in. Nice.

Fingerprint Reader Security

Now it was time to boot. I ordered the T61 configured with XP. After booting, XP asked me to create a username and password. This T61 includes the fingerprint reader, which automatically launched and easily guided me through the process of enrolling my fingerprints. The ThinkPad Fingerprint Security is wonderfully integrated into T61's hardware and XP. After enrolling, the T61 asked me to restart to fully activate the fingerprint security or continue. I restarted. When XP's user authentication screen came up, I had the option of sliding my finger over the fingerprint reader or typing in the password.

So does it work? Are you worried that if you burn your fingerprint off, or lose it heaven forbid, you will be locked out of your computer? Don't worry: In the ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software, you have a number of options for controlling how you want to authenticate user logins: fingerprint only with no password, password only with no fingerprint, or both. Also are other settings as number of attempts before lockout and the time to lockout. You can also enroll all your fingers, just in case.
