Engenius Wireless N Router

Connections

The EnGenius ESR-9850 allows you to connect your Wi-Fi enabled gadgets (laptops, printers, mobile phones, iPad 2, network-attached storage, and so on) at a speed of up to 300 Mbps. You can connect up to four wired devices through its LAN ports. You can use the WAN port to connect to optical or cable internet.

While the EnGenius ESR-9850 connected itself to a wireless network, I connected my desktop computer through the LAN port. I established a wireless network connection between my laptop and my wireless printer. Then I put all three of these devices under the same network. The upload and download speed was amazing, and the routing speed was excellent. Eventually, I connected my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 via the Wi-Fi connection and was very impressed with the way the ESR-9850 router handled all the devices without any problems or interruption in connection. So far, I had five devices connected. While most name brand routers can handle only 200 connections, this EnGenius N Router claims that it can handle 50,000 connections at once. You will probably never be in a situation to test that in your home or small office, but it is a good indication of the ESR-9850's level of sophistication.

Ease of use

Another nice feature of the EnGenius ESR-9850 is that it lets you create four different SSIDs. You can define each SSID with different security settings, for example, WPA , WEP, or WAP2. It lets you define and control the upload and download bandwidth for a particular user through Quality of Service ("QoS"). I found the WAN to LAN throughput reduced significantly with QoS enabled. Without QoS enabled, it delivered a superior WAN-LAN throughput than its competitors. It also allows you to control and monitor bandwidth on the user's end.

This router has a decent wireless range. The 2dBi antennas could communicate with my iPhone no matter where it was in my 2000-square-foot home. I could even access the network from my bathroom on the second floor. However, if you need more coverage, you can take advantage of the Range Expander feature of this router, or you can replace the 2dBi antennas with 5dBi antennas.
