Current Cost EnviR

Review of the Current Cost EnviR

EnviR by Current Cost lets you monitor your home or office’s electricity usage. The transmitter sends updates to the EnviR monitor once every five seconds. The monitor displays the current electricity consumption and calculates the subsequent cost of that energy. You can connect the EnviR to the internet and read your electric usage data on your PC. The EnviR was designed for use with North American power grids.

If you do not have a smart power meter, or if you just want to have an easy way to monitor your home or office’s power usage, the EnviR Kit can give you the information you need. However, the standard EnviR Kit cannot measure how much electricity an individual appliance consumes. To get such specific data, you will need to get Current Cost’s Individual Appliance Monitor (IAM).

Getting Started

The EnviR kit comes in an environmentally-friendly package made from recycled paper. The EnviR is available in two colors, black or white.

The EnviR kit comes with one clamp, a USB-Ethernet cable, a power plug, a transmitter, the monitor, and a user guide. If you have different phases, you can order up to three clamps. And instead of the USB-Ethernet cable, you can order a network bridge if you want a permanent internet connection and automatic uploads of usage data.

The first step to set up the EnviR for usage is to connect the clamps to the transmitter and then hang the clamps around your phase. A licensed electrician should do this for you, to ensure safety and accuracy. Once the clamps are around your mains, the transmitter starts communicating with the monitor. Make sure to keep your EnviR monitor within 300 feet of the transmitter. We put it within 75 feet of the transmitter and got full network strength.

The EnviR monitor displays electric usage statistics within 5 to 10 seconds of synchronizing with the transmitter. Once the EnviR monitor receives the initial data, you can configure it with your unit energy cost and have an instant view of cost of your current electric usage. The monitor also displays the temperature.

Internet Connection and Energy Usage

The DC input and Ethernet cable input are both located at the bottom of the EnviR monitor. The Ethernet end of the cable goes to the EnviR monitor and the USB cable goes to your PC’s USB port. You will need to download a driver and then register your monitor at my.currentcost.com. You can also use Google’s Power Meter to store your data from the EnviR kit. However, the Current Cost website updates your usage data every five minutes, while Google does it every ten minutes. You can also use your Wi-Fi-enabled portable devices to get data from your EnviR monitor.

The EnviR kit worked perfectly when we tested it in the HomeGear lab. We got our electric usage updates every five seconds. The EnviR electric power usage monitor can store data for seven years. The transmitter’s battery should also last for seven years.

Overall, the EnviR kit is a simple and user-friendly device that lets you track your electricity usage and subsequent cost, which can help you avoid unnecessary power usage and may help you reduce your monthly energy bill.
