Finally an inexpensive SATA 2.5" hard drive enclosure that works: The Rocketfish RF-AHD25
Go on eBay.com and search the term "2.5 SATA hard drive enclosure" or "2.5 SATA hard drive external case". You will find hundreds (at least) of similar enclosures. HomeGear.com has looked at some of those, and we can tell you that this enclosure is much better quality with the case, included items, and Roxio software.
Smaller is better in the case of electronics intended to be carried around. The Rocketfish RF-AHD25 is practically as small as possible to enclose a 2.5" hard drive.
Out of the blisterpack, I found the aluminum enclosure itself to be quite solid. The case is made mostly of aluminum, which in an excellent heat conductor. This means the heat that the hard drive generates will be dissipated, keeping the hard drive cooler. Also the package comes with the following:
• USB cable
• eSATA cable
• tiny screwdriver which is small enough to take traveling with you
• a soft, black vinyl, carrying case for the enclosure itself
• two covers: one black and one silver
• A/C adapter only needed in eSATA mode
The black carrying case is easily opened and securely closed with velcro tabs. The case has a handy opening on one side. So, once the hard drive enclosure is inside the carrying case, you can plug your cables into the drive without taking it out of the carrying case. Very convenient!
On the front of the enclosure is a locking switch that keeps the case from accidentally popping open. However, even if locked, I could open the case about three millimeters. Therefore if the enclosure is dropped, the entire enclosure might pop open. Alternatively, obviously if it did pop open, that would be when it hit the ground, thus still protecting the hard drive itself from direct contact and impact. Alternatively again, if the enclosure was inside of its padded vinyl case, then nothing will pop open, and the aluminum probably will not even get dented. In any case, the rubber mountings for the hd will further help soften the force of a drop onto a hard surface.
To open the case was very easy. On one side is a slight lip that you can pull with your fingers. I removed four screws and unscrewed the circuit board from the case. Then, I simply slid a Toshiba MK2546GSX 2.5" hard drive into the connector, easily making a snug fit. I also inserted an older MK1032GSX successfully. I closed up the case, plugged the USB cable into the USB port of a Lenovo T61 laptop running XP SP2. Immediately, the normal Windows dialog box appears with a question of how I wish to deal with the storage device. So, the volume mounted immediately. No worries, no problems, no drivers to install, just the way it should be!
Although the Toshiba 2.5" hard drives fit inside the case perfectly, we have heard reports that some Fujitsu 2.5" hard drives are too tight of a fit. The dimensions of our Toshiba 2.5" hard drives that fit fine are 9mm high, 69mm wide and 100mm deep. We measured the available space inside the enclosure. If your 2.5" mechanism is greater than 13mm high, 71mm wide or 103mm deep, then you will need to do some modification of the case to make it fit.
The RF-AHD25 can be powered fully with the USB power cable. The included power adapter is only necessary when using the case with the eSATA cable in eSATA mode.
A CD of Roxio BackOnTrack software is included. BackOnTrack gives you an interface to deal with backup and restoration of your files. The enclosure has a one-touch backup button that works when the software is installed.
The RF-AHD25 is covered by a one year limited warranty.
